What is Seasickness?

Seasickness is a condition that belongs to the group of motion sicknesses. It is usually experienced when traveling by watercraft, but can also occur in any moving vehicle. Seasickness occurs when the balance center in the inner ear, the eyes and the deep sense (proprioception) transmit incompatible information. This mismatch creates confusion in the brain and leads to symptoms such as nausea, vomiting, dizziness and sweating.

What is good for seasickness?

There are various methods to prevent or alleviate seasickness:

Visual and Physical Stabilization:

Focusing on the horizon or a fixed point can alleviate seasickness symptoms.
Staying in the center of the ship, if possible, can reduce symptoms in those areas where movement is felt less.

Position:

As the ship moves, turning to face the direction of motion can alleviate seasickness.
Keeping the head still while sitting or lying down can be helpful.

Breathing Air:

Getting fresh air can reduce seasickness symptoms as it provides fresh oxygen. Going out on the deck of a ship can be a good option.

Ginger:

Ginger is known for its ability to relieve nausea. Consuming ginger tea, ginger capsules or ginger foods can help with seasickness.

Light and Light Meals:

Avoiding heavy and fatty foods can alleviate nausea. It may be helpful to eat light foods before and during travel.

Medicines:

Over-the-counter seasickness medicines (such as dimenhydrinate or meclizine) can prevent seasickness or relieve its symptoms. It is important to consult a doctor before using these medicines.

Wristbands:

Acupressure bracelets can relieve nausea by pressing pressure points on the inside of the wrist.

Rest:

It is possible to reduce the complex signals to the brain by closing the eyes and resting.

Trying one or more of these methods can alleviate or completely prevent the negative effects of seasickness.
